The 2014 CEO Retreat in Cartagena marks the 25th major meeting since the Global Business Polilcy Council was established in 1992. While keeping with the traditions and format of the sessions as intimate, off-the-record discussions, a few A.T. Kearney leaders will be sharing insights about the key topics and themes throughout the event. Where Do We Find the Next Generation of Leaders?

Our Global Business Policy Council’s annual CEO Retreat kicked off this morning with a compelling discussion on the concept of power. In his latest book, The End of Power, Moisés Naím contends that in today's world, "power is easier to get, harder to use, and easier to lose." This seems to apply in particular to democracies. While more and more leaders are being elected—the number of democratic states has doubled over the past decades to become the clearly dominant model—their mandates are increasingly weaker!

This raises a number of questions about the next generation of political leaders: What's the future of a political model where parties are rejected by our children who are only passionate about single-cause NGOs? With a democratic model that is only good if it delivers improvement for the majority, where will we find future leaders who can drive profound changes and refuse complacency? Can social media play a role in providing more immediate transparency and engagement, leading to increased accountability? ... A clear call for political innovation.

I will continue to post updates here from the retreat on some of the insights from this meeting.
